HOW TO APPLY AND GENERAL INFORMATION

How to Apply

1. Check the Requirements for your Visa application

You can download and print a checklist from this site detailing the documentation you must provide with your application.

See: Visa Types

2. Fill out the correct Form

All application forms must be completed in English. All questions must be answered and the form must be signed. Check on the checklist for your visa type which form is required. All application forms are available from the website of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

See: Forms

3. Attach Two Photographs

You should submit two recent passport sized colour photographs with your application. There are no particular measurement requirements or restrictions.

4. Lodge a complete application

You do not have to attend the Embassy in person to apply for a visa. A visa application can be lodged via mail or courier, or may be lodged by your authorised third person or agent.

See: Contact Us

You will be required to pay the scheduled application charge for the appropriate type of visa. We cannot start processing your application until the correct fee has been received, as the application is legally not valid.

Fees and Charges

The correct visa application charge for your application must be paid at the time the application is lodged.

See: Fees and Charges

Personal information and authorising other people

We legally cannot discuss visa applications (including reasons for decisions) with friends or sponsors, or other third parties, unless we have specific authorisation from the applicant.

If you wish to authorise a person to receive communication and act on your behalf, you will need to advise us in writing. You should do this by completing Form 956 or Form 956A, or the relevant portion of your application form.

Complete Applications

It is important that you submit all documentation in support of your application at the time you apply for the visa. You should support your application with as much information as possible at the time you apply. A decision may be made solely on the information that you provide with your application.

If you are asked to provide additional information, you should clearly indicate your name, date of birth, passport and file reference details when you provide the requested information.

Documents in languages other than English

All personal documents, such as birth, marriage or divorce certificates, provided in a language other than English, must be accompanied by a certified English language translation. Documents should be certified by a notary and translated by an accredited translator. Please note that photocopied documents are not acceptable, you must provide notarised (or certified) copies of documents.

Copies of other documents, such as work certificates, ownership certificates, and bank statements, do not normally have to be certified or translated.

Additional Requirements for Children

In any application including a child aged under 18 years, all people with custody of the child (usually the parents) who are not travelling with the child must provide consent for the child to travel to Australia. The documents you must provide with an application including a child aged under 18 are:

Processing Times

DIAC is committed to meeting the Service Standards published by the Australian Government, in order to provide effective and efficient service to you.

Progress Enquiries

We request that you do not make progress enquiries about your application within the service standard period applicable to your application. Progress enquiries deflect resources away from processing applications and may delay the processing of all applications, including your own.

Under the DIAC Code of Conduct, our staff can not give migration advice, or any assessment of the likely chance of success of any future visa application. Only after a valid application is lodged may a decision-maker make a careful assessment of the merits of the case.

If you have been granted a visa

If you have been granted a visa, you will need to submit your passport to the Australian Embassy in Moscow to have a visa label placed in to your passport. From 1 May 2012, citizens and residents of Ukraine who are granted a visa will be granted a label-free visa. Citizens and residents of Ukraine will no longer need to send or bring their passport to the Australian Embassy in Moscow to receive a visa label.

Please send us your passport by registered mail, courier or bring it in person. If your visa was granted in Australia, make sure that you include a copy of the letter from the processing office.

If you are not coming in person, you must provide us with written authorisation stating you are allowing a third party to collect your passport on your behalf.

Make sure that you tell us how you want us to return your passport.
